Gauge Table: Reference values by yarn weight

When I pick up a yarn without a label, this is my first stop. The reference values are based on the Craft Yarn Council's CYC categories and give you a solid starting point before you knit your own swatch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need the gauge table for?

The table is your starting point, not your verdict. If a pattern calls for DK and you're not sure whether your substitute yarn will work, check here: 21 to 24 stitches per 10 cm is typical. If your swatch comes out at 28, you're knitting noticeably tighter than the reference, which means you either need to go up a needle size or find a different yarn.

Why does my gauge differ from the table?

Every knitter knits differently, tighter or looser. Fibre structure also affects gauge. The table shows averages; your own swatch is always the authoritative measurement.

Can I use the table for crochet?

Crochet gauge values differ from knitting values. In crochet you typically achieve fewer stitches per 10 cm than in knitting with the same yarn weight. Use our dedicated crochet gauge page instead.

Which needle size do I need for a specific yarn?

The table gives an overview. The exact recommendation is on your yarn's ball band, and your personal gauge swatch has the final say.
