Gauge too small, what to do with too many stitches?

You're knitting too tightly: your gauge swatch is too small. Here's how to spot the problem and fix it.

If your gauge swatch has more stitches per 10 cm than the pattern specifies, you're knitting more tightly than intended. Without adjustment your piece would be too narrow and too short.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'gauge too small' mean?

'Too small' means: your swatch has more stitches per 10 cm than the pattern requires. You're knitting more densely, your fabric is smaller than intended.

What can I do if my gauge is too small?

Switch to larger needles. For a difference of 1–2 stitches, going up half a size (e.g. from 3.5 mm to 4 mm) is often enough. Knit a new swatch afterwards and compare again.

Does it help to knit more loosely?

Yes, but only if you can consciously control it. Most knitters unconsciously return to their habitual tension. Switching to larger needles is more reliable.

Can I switch yarn instead of needles?

Yes. A slightly finer yarn (lower yardage per 50 g, finer fibres) can produce a looser swatch on the same needles. Our alternative yarn finder can help you find the right match.
